What To Look For When Selecting A Recording Studio

By Joseph A. Johnson

The place where you record your music is just as important as the lyrics you write or the backing track you are singing or rapping to. This choice can bring about the difference as to whether you are going to be taken as a serious musician or just another joker. In order to end up with a serious record, you should know what to look for when selecting a recording studio.

You should make it a point to get a list of all the equipment the studio has to offer before signing there. Other than the basic instruments and equipment that are available in any other recording room, you should get to know the extras you are going to benefit from. These could be in form of Waves plugins, Pro Tools and a professional monitoring system and signal chain.

In addition to quality equipment, there should be professional technicians who are experienced in working with many genres. The engineers and equipment are the secret behind the music quality. In the same manner, the room should also have all the basic modifications.

The second tip is to get a demo CD or other work of artists that have been completed in the same studio. This can help you understand if the final product is going to come out as envisioned. For even better experience, getting opinions of the artists who are currently recording or worked there in the past can be very helpful as they have firsthand experience.

The next point is the rate per hour the studio is charging. You can only pay for quality and not mediocrity. The price charged must be reflective of quality offered in terms of producers, the equipment and the level of experience of technicians. If you come from a city where there are so many studios, the trick is to get quotes and compare them against what they have to offer.

The other important tip is in the rate you are charged. In most cases, the rates are quoted on hourly basis. If you are in a city with many recording studios, it is helpful to find out as many quotes as possible from different places. This compared with the equipment offered and the level of professionalism can be helpful when making the final decision. It is also advisable to be aware of hidden fees before signing the contract as this can affect the budget considerably. The issue of name space also matters. The recording studio being a business entity is likely to ask for a name space on the CD cover.

Given that studios are in business, they will ask for a name space on your CD cover. You should be aware of this in advance and are on credit before signing the contract. For a better deal, you should talk to various artists whose records have been produced by the studio you select.

There are many things to consider when listing the attributes of a good recording studio, however long this list may be, the primary factors are the rate, equipment, experience and professionalism of engineers and privacy you have when working.
