Some Facts About High Visibility Safety Products

By Minnie Whitley

Safety needs are included in the hierarchical needs of man in order to live live to the fullest. According to this pyramid of needs, man has to feel safe before he can form relationships with other people. He has to feel safe with himself before he can feel confident about himself. In short, he will never have the capacity to fulfill his other needs not unless he fulfills his needs for safety and security.

But, to be honest, there is of course no such feeling as being safe from all kinds of harm. Man feels pain, one way or another, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. He gets hurt emotionally as bonds between him and the people around him weaken and are severed. He gets hurt financially as he faces bankruptcy or unemployment. He gets hurt physically in a hazard prone work place, especially if he neglects to use high visibility safety products.

These products can take varied forms like jumpsuits, vests, trousers, hats and other apparel that serve to protect a person from possible harm in the workplace. These clothing are usually very brightly colored and have reflector strips for them to be seen clearly.

Not all members of the working class get to wear protective clothing. Working force who are required to wear such comprise those who work as traffic enforcers, roadside construction laborers, rescue and emergency units, and parking lot attendants. These people wear such clothing because they get to work in areas not reached by good lighting. Their brightly colored garb allow for them to be seen easily even in dimly lit conditions.

These apparel are made using two types of materials. One is the fluorescent material. This takes UV rays from the sun and sends it back to anyone who looks at it as more visible light. However, as they need UV rays from the sun, products made from these materials can only be used in broad daylight. This has lead to the dilemma faced by night time workers who need the same protective gear.

To be able to provide at least the same protective wear to those who had to work after light, retro reflective materials are used. Unlike the first type that utilizes only UV rays, this second one reflects any light back to the source. Since it needs any available light, it is the perfect choice when working in the absence of the sun.

There are also very special protective wear that functions best even when it is daytime or nighttime. These are called combined performance retro reflective material. They give good visibility in all lighting conditions.

When you are choosing which safety apparel to use, you should see to it that you take note of the size or the fit of the working gear. It should provide for maximum coverage with reflectors than can be seen at all angles. It should not be too bulky, especially when worn with ordinary work clothes underneath. It should also allow its wearer to move freely and comfortably.

Finally, there are three classes of this garments. Class 1 provides the lowest coverage. Class 2 offers moderate coverage and the third offers the greatest coverage.
