Summarized Fiction Writing Best Practice

By Young Lindsay

Most writers find it difficult to identify the starting point in their quest to come up with a novel. Fiction writing best practice is a collection of simple ideas that work for both amateurs and pros. Once you have begun the process, it becomes easier from one chapter to the other. These ideas have been used by award winning writers and proven effective.

The confusion when writing novels arises when you think of the characters and how to place them within the watertight plot. There are subplots that have to feed the main story in a seamless manner. It is your responsibility as a writer to create a theme that will bring together the plot, the setting and the characters. With all these in mind, where do you begin?

There are three main processes when you want to create a novel. Each plays a very crucial role in developing an award winning best seller. They are planning, writing and revision. When developing a plan, you build the foundation or frame on which your story will stand. It gives a rough idea of what your novel will dwell on.

Writing requires the interaction between prose and dialogue to create an interesting story. This is the stage where flesh is added to the frame created during planning. It requires creativity and an open mind since this is where the novel is created.

Revision comes at the end but is as crucial as creating the story. Poorly written work can be transformed through revision while the best story can be made useless by failure to revise. The services of grammar and creative editors may be required at this stage.

It is necessary to establish the motive before you begin. Some writers are inspired by money while others are driven by fame. The best writers are those with goals that are bigger than themselves. You must have a beautiful story to tell. You also must realize that this is the only way you can tell the story.

There are five pillars on which the works of fiction stand. These are plot, setting, view point, symbolism and theme as well as characters. Separating these aspects will create a disjointed plot. Each is instrumental in shaping the outcome of your creative work. A perfect balance and awareness of these aspects is required. It takes a back and forth journey to master them.

Every novel has an underlying theme. It defines the manner of presentation in terms of sentence choice, characters, wording and setting. It is the main consideration when choosing the protagonist and antagonist. It informs the interactions between your characters and their setting and eventually actions shaping the plot.

Listing your characters during planning is essential since they are the basis of any action in the story. Some will be clear from the beginning while others will emerge as you write. The environment chosen when you begin writing should have no distractions and be as comfortable as possible. It gives you room to concentrate as you write and rewrite the chapters. Before engaging external editors, go through your work to ensure that it captures your idea.
