Types And Scope Of Narrative Drawings

By Lelia Hall

Art works have been widely used for the last two centuries. Narrative drawings is a form of visual art basically used to narrate a story or portray what happened earlier or past events and ongoing story by use of pictures, sculptures, etc. This art derived its history from the stone age when the early man used drawings to give meaning to a scenario.

There are many forms of narrative or descriptive art around the world. Among them are articulated language, pictures, gestures and a combination of all of them. Narrative is present in myths, legends, epics, comedy and paintings. In most societies, these forms of narratives are well preserved in archives and museums to appreciate the history of the culture of mankind.

Narratives derive their history back during the history of mankind. There probably would never be people without these narratives. They are very important in learning the origin of man and the evolution to date.

Descriptive artists use different types of images to represent their descriptive action. The static images in a medium do not by themselves tell stories since stories are told over time and pictures are seen all at once. However, all descriptive arts have something in common. Different cultures have developed distinctive ways to distinguish descriptive action from pictures.

During ancient past, before the introduction of literacy, most of these unique drawings were done with a concurrent descriptive style. With the development of literacy, art has as well developed and pictures were well organized like words on a paper which helped in defining the direction of the story more easily.

The modern method of art representation has brought about more decent ways of narrating stories during the recent century. Nowadays, there is the use of newspapers, comic strips, comic books and artistic drawings on canvas among others. They all apply the modern technology like laser painting and canvas to bring the narrative exploits.

Paintings were mostly used in traditional art to cover most of the descriptive scenes. It is easier to represent these in paintings than in sculpture. Illustrating some figures in sculpture becomes more complex and may involve expert work and also may be hard to interpret. There are different types of narratives used today. Artists come up with their own ways to portray stories, represent the space and shape time. Artwork is never limited to one type of story, it is a diversified discipline.

There are different types of approaches to narrative art. These include art in series, descriptive works within a frame, works with no clear story line and works that document an event or era. All of these are widely used by different artists depending on their theme.

In recent times, narrative painting and sculpture have been used to give a picture of, not only great moments in history, but also domestic dramas of a particularly sentimental nature. Story telling was believed to be best pursued by writers, but also visual artists have proved themselves to do it even better. Modern art can be used in many different aspects in contemporary life.
