The Artist Declares Faith Through Christian Modern Art

By Eric Jimenez

Your emotions may be strong when viewing a picture of the face of Christ. An artist uses his talent to express faith and devotion to God. It is pleasant to look at Christian Modern Art because it is beautiful, inspiring and many people are encouraged to pray when they see it.

Jesus, God and angels are prevalent in many of these paintings. One artist, Thomas Kinade, is considered one of the most collectible of all Christian artists. His works are the tangible way he shares his religious faith with all the world.

Jesus is usually painted with a deep intensity of emotion expressed in His eyes. There are renditions of Him hung on the cross. They may show Him clearly or in the abstract. Many are of the cross alone in all colors and distorted shapes. For example, one shows it in small blue squares and rectangles. Behind the cross is a backdrop of small red rectangles and squares.

Crosses of gold are contrasted with multicolored backgrounds or outlined in blue. Poses of Jesus display His body language showing sorrow and defeat. In one series He is painted in red against a dark, black background.

Various bible verses are painted in attractive patterns. Some are bright and cheerful and others are dark and sad, depending on the tone of the verse. There is something to appeal to everyone since most Christians have a favorite bible verse.

Angels are always a favored figure in Christian paintings and on Christmas trees. They are beautiful and glowing, in pristine white robes with halos on their heads. Others are shown helping people to carry heavy burdens throughout difficult journeys. They sometimes are shown as caricatures from childrens stories.

Sometimes startling outbursts of color jump out at the eye from the abstracts. Lovely stylized flowers may bloom with blossoms growing towards heaven. Dark, monochrome pictures show Jesus on the cross. Each one is a personal rendition of the painters grief over the crucifixion.

The spectator can visualize the sorrowful hours of the death of Jesus on Good Friday. Alternatively, they can view the joy of Easter Morning when he rose from the dead. An abstract painting is anything the viewer imagines it to be. Circles may represent the circle of life to some and a glimpse into eternity to other.

The secular abstracts created by Jackson Pollock are popular. The religious abstracts are seen in many homes, both as religious symbols and beautiful art. One Christian artist, Mark Lawrence, creates paintings using a unique digital method. He calls this lovely medium painting with light.
