The Art-Related Do's And Don'ts

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

Art is one of the broadest fields that people can invest time in. There are many who enjoy writing, crafting stories that they would like to read themselves. Others may be focused on more visual media, along the lines of painting or web design. Whatever the case may be, art matters and there are certain ways to go about creating it. For those who would like to make careers out of this, in the future, please be mindful of these do's and don'ts.

Do consider your interests at the onset. If there's one thing that can be said about art, it's that we all have different viewpoints on the matter. For example, maybe you're the kind of budding artist who prefers digital media, more so than anything else. Wouldn't it make sense, then, to go after focuses like web or graphic design? These may interest you, in this scenario, meaning that you'll find art to be that much more of a beneficial program.

Don't focus on what others create. One of the reasons why art matters is that it comes more from the heart, than the mind. When you work from the heart, it's that much more likely that you will create unique work. When you emulate others, you work more so from the mind, which doesn't have much of a positive influence on your work. Art should be made with emotion in place; otherwise, you will not find yourself enjoying your artistic pursuits as much.

Do stay hungry for knowledge. The only way to improve at anything, be it in regards to art or what have you, is to continually pursue knowledge. Even though you may reach a point where you feel like you know everything you have to, it's unlikely that you actually will. There's always something new to learn, as well as new methods to carry out. It's just a matter of pursuing what you do not know, by asking questions and researching, so that your skill set can become well-rounded.

Don't be afraid to accept critique. One of the difficult aspects of art is understanding where your faults lie. You may not be able to recognize them, at least early on, but those who review your work may have an easier time of doing so. When this happens, you should accept the words given to you, as they can serve as some of the best building blocks to help you become a better worker. Failure to do so may hinder your growth in any artistic field.
