The Steps On Cleaning A Faux Sheepskin Rug

By Robert Turner

Other common term for a sheepskin is lambskin. Lambskin is the hide of a sheep. This material is not like the common leather types which are tanned with some fleece intact like pelts. A lot of manufacturers have been using these materials for their products like hats, baby and invalid rugs, clothing, slippers, automotive seat covers, covering, footstools, pelts, and gloves.

Fleece or wool is also being considered by medical profession as hypoallergenic. The sheepskin itself is already an insulator, drawing away the perspiration from wearers to the fibers. In the older times, sheepskin vests, boots, coats, and faux sheepskin rug are commonly used by people. So here are the steps of cleaning the item while maintaining the quality.

First is fill the tub using tepid warm water then add an appropriate type of a powder or a liquid solution suitable to the material type. And since this article talks about a material made from fleece or wool, delicate wool solutions are recommended for use, however, a small amount only must be added. Instruction labels are commonly found on any items, so make sure to carefully them and follow. Through this, maintaining the appearance and quality would be possible with no damages.

Using hot water in washing would be fine. However, using this excessively may bring unnecessary disadvantages. Some disadvantages include resulting to a difficult rinsing process, the leather becomes damaged and shrunk, the colors may possibly fade, the wool piles may felt, and there maybe some dirt and stains and it maybe hard to remove them.

A woolskin shampoo and conditioner is recommended for use in washing and not the wool detergents. These detergents contain phosphates, bleach, triethanolamine, phosphoric acid, chelating agents, alkali, peroxide, sequestering agents, or enzymes. All of these might be harmful to the leather, and thus, using these must be avoided.

When placing the rug in tub fleece, the position must be side down. Be sure that this is fully immersed in warm water. Just like washing other types of clothing, leaving the rug and soaking it in water with a solution for several minutes is possible. This can help in the removal of dirt easier and allows the smell of solution to be absorbed. You may not need to scrub it forcibly to remove excess dirt, thus, avoiding damage.

Next is hand washing the item gently. There are times when some dirt or stains are left, so never scrub the item or brush it because this can possibly cause damage. After the stains have been removed, rinse the item well using a fresh water. Wash it continuously until you can see clear water having no bubbles.

After all the processes, the sheepskin must be drained first before removing it from tub. And using a comb, comb the fur very gently in order to return its softness when dried. Combing can prevent it from having small that would look ugly. An important reminder is to avoid brushing harshly for the prevention of falling down. And also, comb it in only one direction.

For drying you may either lay it flat, with the fleece in side down, or you may also hang it for drip dying and see to it that you are keeping it away from the direct heat of the sunlight. An excess heat may possibly damage the wool. You can also use the dryer with no heat and set it into a gentle or fluff cycle only.
