Get To Know More About Sand Tray Therapy

By William Kennedy

Sand tray is a technique that is becoming increasingly recognized as a powerful therapeutic technique that facilitates effective healing in an environment that is not intimidating to the patient. It makes use of sand and miniatures to express how the client feels or their response to particular traumas that they have undergone in their lives. It is a technique that can be used with both children and adults and it has proven effective in cases where the clients are resistant to express themselves as a result of being afraid to open up. Therefore sand tray therapy can be used for those who have difficulty in verbal expressions.

The technique often is used on adolescents and kids as they normally find it hard to express themselves in words and properly articulate their thoughts and feelings. Therapists usually provide sand trays, eaters, and miniatures that are variant. These include cars, buildings, trees, human figures, or other natural items, fantasy among others. The miniatures allow clients an opportunity to create a world that articulates their creativity.

The world created does not need to be artistically or architecturally correct in any way and it is good to know that creativity is not a significant requirement. The therapist is more concerned with the inspiration behind what the client has created. There are some who just use the soil type and water but some employ more of the miniatures. The story behind how the clients have decided to portray their own imaginative world helps the therapist to link the client life experiences to the world created.

This therapeutic tool is effective in expressing of non-verbal forms of communications such as the portrayal of images that are in the mind. A client does not need to talk to the therapist but can express their thoughts, feelings, perceptions and emotional conflicts through the use of playing with the soil type and the miniatures. It fosters personal development as well as increases the scope of imagination.

This technique is useful in revealing conflicts that the client may not consciously recognize as being existent. This allows the therapist to discuss the existence the emotional conflicts and how to solve them effectively. The clients become more self-aware of the causative agents of their problems and are able to communicate further through this technique.

It is often utilized with kids who may not yet be in their stages of being able to appropriately articulate words or even those who may not be mature enough to articulate their feelings through spoken word. It becomes effective because kids are usually enlightened with the ideas of playing using toys and sand provided in some safe space.

Although this technique has been considered to be juvenile and applicable only to children, it has been proven to be effective in teenagers and adults as well. This is especially for the ones who are unable to complete their verbal expression as a result of lacking the words of the general fear of opening up. With this tool, the therapists can create a deeper bond quicker than when only words are being relied upon.

It is not only used for individuals but can be applied in groups or married couples. It aids in paving a way for a discussion that a client would previously have wanted to talk about. The therapist allows a client to be in control and this creates a safe place where the client can relive the trauma and establishes a gradual healing process.
