Enjoy Reading Historical Fiction Graphic Novels

By Amanda Baird

Historical fiction graphic novels consist of both text and illustrations. They are combined to tell a fictional story using events and periods in history as a setting. This genre is becoming more popular all the time as readers enjoy the fast pace and the engaging combination of both vivid pictures and words.

Such a novel differs from a comic book in its length, the completeness of the story and the lack of advertising. The story progresses in linear fashion and both text and illustrations are used to move it forward. Facial expressions and physical movements are relayed visually so this genre combines the appeal of a good story with an almost movie like format. Some of these books even find their way onto bestseller lists, competing with the more traditional type of novel.

The authors of these books often do a great deal of research into the period of history about which they are writing. By becoming familiar with the period or event they are writing about, they can accurately portray the way the characters think, talk and act. They have to have the skill to weave the story and the history together in such a way that readers do not feel they are being hit over the head with the research. The goal is to entertain while at the same time allowing the reader to wonder what it would have been like for them if they had lived in that time and place.

These books deal with topics from ancient history through to modern times. The Grecian Olympic Games, the Roman Slave Trade and the Egyptian pyramids are just some of the topics covered in ancient history. World wars, kings and queens, presidents and their wives, explorations and even serial killers are all brought to life in these books.

There are many of these books available from online stores today as this genre grows in popularity. They cater to all age groups and there are those suitable for small children, teenagers and adults. Younger children in particular who are just learning to read may benefit from reading such a book However, these books are not just for those who want an easy read. A number of them are complex, extremely well written and enjoyed by the most discerning adult readers.

Pictures have always been used to tell stories, from those first scratched on the walls of caves. The use of illustrations does not necessarily mean that a book is of lower intellectual value. On the other hand, there are many people who benefit from the immediacy offered by illustrations such as those who find it difficult to read.

Teachers may find that these books are a useful tool in trying to teach their students history. Students often regard history as boring. The use of text and illustrations helps the student to relate to the past more easily. Someone who is reluctant to tackle pure text may be encouraged to read a book with illustrations and get hooked on reading in the process.

Historical fiction graphic novels are a form of literature that is growing in popularity. They combine excellent stories with vivid illustrations. History is brought to life in a unique manner, giving individuals the opportunity of gaining an insight into other lives and times.
