Exploring The World Of Miniature Flowers

By Rhea Solomon

Miniature flowers usually conjure up images of tiny roses or perhaps sun flowers or daisies. The miniature world of gardening offers so much more. There are so many species of plants that have been miniaturized that the gardening possibilities are unlimited. The selection includes iris, geranium, foxglove, and rhododendrons. There are a multitude of shrubs and bushes to choose from also.

Roses bloom easier and with more abundance than other plants. That serves to make them one of the most popular species. They come in a variety of forms including climbers, trailers and specimen plants. Most people keep them in pots on the patio or deck but they can survive in the house with the proper lighting and care.

The more exotic types of miniatures are impatiens from Hawaii which have tiny red blossoms edged with orange. Carpet violets have shiny leaves and produce abundant small white blooms. Small blooming cyclamens set up well in concert with Irish moss or perhaps a mount atlas daisy that has fern like foliage and daisy like flowers for a tiny fairy garden.

Dwarf plants are also included in the mini realm. These plants are kept small by root restriction, intense pruning and genetics. They can be gardenias, irises, snapdragons or popcorn plants to name a few. They stand about two feet tall and have multiple colored blossoms to choose from.

Last in this group are the micro-mini plants. They are the smallest of all miniatures. These tiny plants will have blooms that are less than an inch across. One of the roses in this group is named bambino and has explosive orange flora. Another is chasin' rainbows that displays yellow petals rimmed in bright red.

Caring for these tiny plants is much the same as you would with the standard sized plants. They require regular fertilization because they are aggressive bloomers. The same pests and diseases can attack your minis as your regular sized plants. It is wise to keep an organic pesticide handy for non-rose miniatures and sparingly use chemicals for the roses.

Many people do not have the time or skills to work with real plants. For those persons the answer is simple. Artificially made mini-plants are available and many are very high quality and look the same as the real thing. They are made of silk, glass, plastic, and cold set clay. You can even make your own out of cookie dough and frosting is you like. The artificial plants can be purchased at any craft store and many retail outlets on line. These substitutes can be used in the same manner as the real ones and also can help hobbyists give their projects a realistic appearance.

It is easy to see how miniature flowers have become so popular in recent years. With homes, apartments, and condos having such limited space for gardening a smaller garden becomes the norm. People who have a whimsical nature can build fairy gardens that allow them to let go of any stress they may have. Doll house and train collectors use the mini plants to finish the appearance of reality.
