Preschoolers are a lot of fun and a bundle of energy. While they need plenty of outdoor play and imaginative play, another great idea is to set up some fun art activities. Not only is this a fun way to pass the time, art helps improve fine motor skills and allows children a chance to express their emotions. If you aren't sure what types of art projects to try, here are some fun suggestions.
Obviously, preschool children don't have the dexterity or development for some art projects, but they can still explore different types of art, such as collage. A nature collage is a great way to combine some outdoor time with an art project. Children can collect bark, twigs, pebbles, feathers and leaves and then glue them down on paper anyway they see fit. Be sure to discuss the differences in texture of each item to extend the lesson.
You can also consider a project with tear art. For example, draw a large pumpkin on a piece of paper and give them a few sheets of orange paper in different shades. Have them tear off small pieces and try to glue them down inside the lines as much as possible. After the orange paper has filled the shape, have them use brown or green bits for the stem and black triangles for the nose and eyes. This is a great Halloween or autumn activity. You can use pink and red paper and fill a heart for Valentine's. For Christmas, use green bits to fill a tree and small colorful circles on top as ornaments.
Murals can be a fun project, but small children typically have a difficult time making use of all of a huge long piece of mural paper. A pre-printed mural might be a better option, and you can purchase these inexpensively from a site such as ArtProjectsForKids.org. This site offers dozens of choices suitable for children from about age 4 and up.
There is a wide variety of subject choices to consider, including the works of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Klee, Gauguin, Kandinsky and even Andy Warhol. Other choices include holiday-themed murals or perhaps large murals of different animals ranging from giraffes to dinosaurs to butterflies. After the children have colored in each page of the mural, you just put it together in the correct order and you have an instant piece of artwork.
Children tend to learn more if there is art involved. So if you wish to teach your children about a particular subject, be sure to have some cool art projects that relate to the theme. For example, an ocean theme would include having children create pictures of a jellyfish, creating a turtle out of a paper plate or perhaps designing a crab using their handprints. Don't forget to include a trip to a local aquarium if possible. A weather theme would include making a daily weather calendar, as well as having the children create pictures of the sun, clouds and rain or snow to put onto the calendar.
