Why Kush Remains Popular Despite Strong Criticism

By Jaclyn Hurley

Cannabis is and always has been a subject of considerable controversy. Millions of people feel that it is a medicinal herb that is neither dangerous nor addictive. Many studies have been done but there is no clear consensus regarding the value of the plant. In some places of the world Cannabis or Kush, as it is also known, is legal but in many other parts of the world it is illegal to grow, use or sell it.

Cannabis is indigenous to South and Central Asia. This flowering plant has been used for many different purposes for a very long time. Some plants are specially cultivated to produce a lot of fiber, and are used for the production of hemp, a strong fiber. The plant is also used for medicinal purposes, but, of course, it is its use as a recreational drug that causes the most controversy.

Marijuana has long been used to help patients undergoing chemotherapy to combat the nausea and vomiting that is common with such treatment. Many patients prefer using the Cannabis because many other medicines used for the same purpose causes nasty side effects such as hallucinations and dizziness. One side effect of Marijuana is the fact that it stimulates the appetite and is therefore used with patients suffering from HIV / AIDS.

There can be little doubt that Marijuana is highly effective in relieving pain. Terminally ill patients experiencing chronic pain often use it for relief, but many other patients also use it for the same purpose. In addition, multiple sclerosis patients are given Cannabis to treat the problem of spasticity. Ten different countries have approved Cannabis for use in these circumstances.

Cannabis is not only used for medicinal purposes. Evidence has been found that it has been used in religious ceremonies as far as 2700 years ago. The Jushi culture used it as an aid to divination. There is also ample evidence that it has been used extensively as part of religious ceremonies in the east. Nowadays, the Rastafarian movement claims that Cannabis is an essential part of their religion.

Among the many ways in which Marijuana can be consumed, smoking and vaporizing remains the most popular, probably because it is easy and it does not require extensive preparations. Many people prefer to vaporize the useful parts of the plant and to then inhale the fumes that are produced. Others prefer to smoke it like a cigarette or by using a pipe or similar device.

Many users prefer to eat or drink their Marijuana. This is especially popular in environments where smoking is not allowed or when in situations where some members of the company will frown upon the use of Cannabis. There are numerous recipes for cookies, muffins and other foods that contain Cannabis. The main disadvantage is that it takes longer to achieve the desired effect.

It seems that the use of Cannabis will remain a contentious issue for some time. Detractors are adamant that it is a drug that almost certainly leads to other, more dangerous drugs. Others maintain that it is harmless and that it has many positive uses in society. It seems unlikely that these differences of opinion will be solved any time soon.
