Choosing The Right Male Voice Over Talents

By Lila Bryant

People use voiceovers for many different types of production. Usually when people think of the term they think of advertising but equally they could be used to narrate documentaries, audio books and so forth. Sometimes there will be the need specifically for male voice over talents and therefore you need to be sure you have the right one.

As with any form of creative talent experience is usually a massive advantage. A more vocal talent is more likely to know where to position themselves when recording their audio. They are also more likely to know the kind of tone you want and so you are likely to spend less time doing takes as you try and get the right kind of tone.

Before you talk to someone about getting a vocalist you need to think about what your project is and who would be best suited to it. For example you may want to do a commercial about road safety. You may decide that the best way to get people aware of road safety is to use someone with theatrical training to make a dramatic message that will shock people into being more careful.

Alternatively you may want to record an audio book for children. Audio books are often used as a way to help children get to sleep. Therefore in this instance you may want someone with a gentler voice in order to ease the children and relax them before they go to bed.

It sounds strange but different accents can often create different effects when people are listening. For example a British accent often gives something a feel of gravitas, especially if the person who is doing the recording has some form of theatrical training. There is also the tone. A deep voice can command more authority than someone with a lighter tone. However if the person is discussing a medical matter then you may want someone with a lighter voice who sounds more sympathetic to the listener. If you are contacting an agency you should give them a clear brief about this.

Another vital aspect is the demo. This is your opportunity to hear how they sound and whether it is appropriate for your particular brief. Someone may have a terrific booming voice but if you want something a bit softer and sensitive then this will be largely irrelevant.

In either instance you need to get an audio sample from them. This gives you the chance to listen to their vocal range and whether what they can offer will work for your project. If they are recording from their own studio this becomes especially important as it gives you the opportunity to test the sound quality of their equipment as well. This is vital because ultimately you will be the one judged on the final quality of a project and any poor recording will reflect badly on you whereas choosing someone professional with good quality recording equipment will reflect well.

Some voice over artists will work independently while others will work through an agency. In either case you need to ensure that they understand what you want. Furthermore it is best to contact as wide a variety of talents as possible in order to compare what they have to offer and who is the most appropriate for your personal requirements.
