One series with this type of theme that is making raves on the anime world today is Code Geass.

In the midst of it all, Lelouch vi Britannia, a Britannian prince was exiled to Japan together with his sister. The order of exile came from his own father, the emperor, which sent them to Japan as a bargaining instrument. This happened right after his mother passed away at his watch and his sister became blind and unable to walk. Because of this events, Lelouch vowed to be the person who will destroy the cruel empire that is Britannia.
One thing that the Prince is now using for his own revenge is the power of the Geass which can make him control any human being at will. He then became the leader of a rebellious organization which desires to bring down Britannia. The whole process of getting revenge change his personality entirely.
The intention of the main character in this is plot is admirable like since he aims to free a country from the clutches of a more greedy and more powerful nation. And to some who really have not watched it, he could be a hero. But that could not be entirely true.
One of the things that captured the attention of critics is the quality of the graphical presentation in the anime. It is consistent even in difficult scenes. There are other animes of the same genre and idea as well but what sets this particular series apart is the whole plot.
The story line of the anime is solid. And you will be able to see twists which you have never expected. There is also a different kind of humor which you will be able to observe as the story progresses. The dark humor somewhat balances the seriousness of the entire story theme.

It is not everyday that you can encounter a show where the leading character is hated more times than others. Most of the people who gave the review liked it.
