The color theory is an extremely important aspect to any student who is taking up an arts course like graphic design or fine arts. Mixing colors and using them is one of the things that they will be doing in both their school lives and their work which is why this has to be taught. The entire lesson is divided into two parts namely the basic and the advanced color theory.
Now for those who do not know, the basic theory is revolved around the color wheel that is created by Sir Isaac Newton. This wheel shows how the primary colors would mix in order to form secondary colors. The primary colors are blue, yellow, and red and if they are mixed together, they form the other colors of the spectrum.
Now after learning the basics, one will be moving on to the advanced lessons where he will encounter a little bit more computations. Now basically he will be learning about shades, brightness, and other things. However, the most basic things that he will at least learn would be the hue, chromaticity or chroma, saturation level, the value, and luminance.
Now on the top of the list of concepts to learn, there would be the hue. The the three primary colors that were mentioned above can be distinguished by measurement of hue. The hue is actually just the amount of light that is emitted from colors and it measures the strength of these colors.
The second concept that would be taught to the students would be the chroma which measures how colorful a pigment is. Now this is strongly related to the hue because it actually depends on how strong the hue is. Now if one would say that the hue is weak in a particular color, then it is known to be more colorful and vice versa.
The third concept to learn about would be saturation which measures the intensity of a pigment. When one would say intensity, he would be the strength of its brightness and how much it would affect the eyes. Colors that are bright like red, yellow, and other mixes with these are known to have high saturation.
After that, one will then be taught about value. Now the value actually measures brightness as a whole. If one pigment is bright, then it possesses a high value level as compared to one that is dark.
The very last concept that one will be learning would of course be luminance. Now measuring luminance is actually quite similar to measuring value or saturation but it is much more mathematical in nature as there is an actual formula on how to measure this. It is measured in intensity per unit of where it came from and it could be solved by getting the average of a collection of colors.
