Choosing A Childrens Book For Boys

By Etta Bowen

The ability to enjoy reading is very advantageous that comes naturally to some while others need to work at it a bit. Typically, the earlier and more frequently a young person is exposed to literature, the better many of their key life skills will tend to be. Girls generally gravitate to this activity easily, though it may take a childrens book for boys specifically to encourage some males.

Speaking generally, females are naturally better at sitting still and focusing while males tend to be driven to move and often have difficulty concentrating. This is not an all inclusive statement, however, since a variety of reasons make enthusiastic and reluctant readers common in both genders. Building someone's interest in this pastime begins with identifying the root of their disinterest.

Several things such as low attention issues, dyslexia or concept comprehension issues and other medical conditions can contribute to a child's lack of interest in reading. However, the most frequently stated reason given by the majority of youth is that they cannot find topics that keep their focus, thereby making the activity boring. Teachers and librarians often compile lists of titles that broach a wide range of subjects to help even the most apathetic individual find something they might enjoy.

When it comes to young males, there are a plethora of subjects that could be used to catch their interest. These range from classic scenarios like adventures, history, mythology, science and sports to more specific topics such as Manga, aliens, fantasy worlds and creatures, graphic novels, zombies and other supernatural beings, dinosaurs and all types of vehicles. Practically everything one can think of has been written about.

Quite often, adults do not realize how serious a child's lack of interest in reading is or how important it is to try and encourage them to read even small articles in newspapers and magazines. Literary acuity is a key part of success in school as it leads to better skills in creative and critical thinking as well as those in comprehension, communication and writing. These children also tend to have above average vocabularies and a heightened imagination.

There are many ways in which teacher, parents and mentors might encourage the young people in their lives to take a more active interest in reading. When adults take the time to read to them and discuss the different aspects of the story, the child tends to crave literary input on their own as well. Sharing this activity is best done frequently and enthusiastically.

One technique for discovering what a child enjoys is to try reading them stories on several different topics. When they show a particular interest, encourage it by sharing more titles of similar style. Take them to the library and allow them to search for other titles belonging to their desired niche and perhaps discover new ones as well.

The ability to read and comprehend is a skill that will prove to be extremely useful to a person throughout their lifetime. It is a wonderful way to expand one's range of knowledge, take an adventure, learn something new, experience time travel, explore a whole new world or just relax and be entertained. Being able to appreciate the written word is a very special gift indeed.
