For those who specialize in art, regardless of the particular medium, one can argue that writing is one of the finest. To say that writing is able to be integrated into various topics would be an understatement. Let's say that you are someone who is heavy into game design; it's possible that stories can be created through writing skills. Marketing agencies will require writers as well, since the creation of content is done largely through effective writing. However, you have to consider that writing can serve greater purposes outside of professional matters.
When I was in school, I found myself doing little writing, at least in terms of creativity. I didn't exactly find this to be conducive, since even back then I was someone who enjoyed being creative, which means that most of my enjoyable writing was done outside of school. Everything from fiction to blogs detailing my own life were created. While they may not have gained many readers, at the very least I was able to convey my thoughts, since I couldn't so effectively in the social sense.
I am sure that many other writers will be able to agree with such a sentiment. Keep in mind that many new college students do not have large groups of friends; many students may not be able to make friends even after time has passed. However, writing does something that not every activity can. It is able to bring people together, regardless of their social skills, and it allows them to meet like-minded people they probably wouldn't have encountered otherwise.

What makes it even better is that you do not necessarily have to be skilled in order to get involved in writing; you simply have to possess an idea and the drive to make said idea come to life. Yes, writing can serve as something of a gateway when it comes to a person's future in the professional sense. For their own comfort and leisure, though, it's an activity that shouldn't be stopped.
