The Alternatives Available For The Head Coverings For Hair Loss

By Kristen Baird

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are all treatment procedures that target the rapidly growing cells, a characteristic that is shared between the cancer cells and the hair cells. This explains why hair loss is common with the two therapies. This can occur in any body part, between 2 to 3 weeks after the commencement of the therapy. There is little that can be done other than to buy head coverings for hair loss.

The head and the pubic part suffer most, particularly from chemotherapy. In the case of radiation therapy, the areas affected are the parts that are receiving the radiation. Even though there are many steps that can help reduce the effect of these therapies, none is perfect. Some good advices include the use of sunscreen, use of soft pillows, avoid chemical treatments, and most importantly, use head covering to minimize exposure to sun, wind and the cold.

When it comes to fashion, and indeed the general personality and image, the hair play a very big role, a factor that becomes obvious the moment one start losing them. However, this is not the time for one to be stressed. There are several alternatives that have already been explored for decades. The most common alternative has always been to have the head covered until the moment the new nice hair is fully grown.

The choice of the best cover should start even before the hair start falling off and the cancer center is where the search begins. These centers can give advice of the available alternatives, each with its advantages and weak points. Secondly, there are several shops available online that also offer good deals with a wider collection to choose from. Additionally, the American Cancer Society has been at the forefront in offering assistance to cancer survivors, particularly with similar items

The covering of choice largely depends on your preferences and the financial capability. Generally, there are two categories. These are the wigs and hairpieces and the caps, scarves and the turbans. In the first category, there are synthetic options which are cheaper and there are also natural or real hairs that look nice, comfortable but are more expensive and more difficult to maintain. The oncologist is in a better position to offer advice should one of these options be chosen.

The other wide category consists of the caps, the turbans, and the scarves which are the cheapest and easiest to maintain of all the alternatives. They also come in different styles, colors, looks, and materials.

However, covering the head is not always a must do for all. In fact, it is not comfortable in warm weather when it gets most uncomfortable. Since most people still opt to have the head covered, the main issue should always be to choose an alternative that is comfortable.

Cancer management is often very difficult, particularly for the patients and their immediate families. It is therefore good to seek advice and support from the specialists and use covers that are easy to maintain and do not further drain the financial resources of the family.
