The 3 Big Missteps Film Students Should Note

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

To say that film fits into different genres would be an understatement. These genres entail, but are not limited to, the likes of action, drama, and romance. Filmmakers understand what their creations should have, so that they reach as many people as possible. With that said, those who are fresh out of art school may not know all of the facts. In order to better educate these men and women on such matters, here are the top 3 mistakes not to be avoided.

If you want to talk about the biggest mistakes in film, you have to consider casting. One of the main reasons for this, as you'll come to learn, is that many actors and actresses wind up with roles they are ill-suited for. While they may not be bad actors, the truth of the matter is that not everyone can digest the material they are given. As a result, the mistake of poor casting has to be considered when films, of all genres, are being created.

There's also the lack of empathy that exists in many films. When you're following a main character throughout a film, you want to relate to him or her in some way. Maybe there is an event that happened which makes said character relatable. It could also be their personality that draws you in. Whatever the case may be, you have to incorporate an empathetic element somewhere in the film; it will not nearly as effective as it would have been otherwise.

Filmmaking also hinges on marketing, for those who may not have believed this. You have to take into account that those in film have to advertise their wares, meaning that different services will have to be brought into the fold. Many movie producers have taken to social media, in this day and age, which makes sense when considering the audiences these websites possess. Keep in mind, though, that this is just one of the many paths that can be taken in the advertising sense.

If there's one thing that can be said about film, it's that there are right and wrong ways to go about the creative process. With that said, if you're going to get involved in the filmmaking process, it's the latter that will be especially noteworthy. Make it a point to educate yourself, as you can attend an art school with a major in film production. Once you graduate, you can put that extensive degree of knowledge to the best of use, ensuring that only captivating films are made.
