Photography has become a way of life today. Some years back, photography was taken seriously as a hobby or a full-time or part-time job. People depended on it for a livelihood. Today, things have been changed by the introduction of various technologies, especially smartphones. Several tasks that were previously impossible are now possible with the use of smartphones. Users of thee phones can take as many shots as they want anywhere without restrictions.

It is also possible to install formatting software in smartphones so that photos taken can be edited to enhance color and other aspects of the photos. People share the photos they take and edit on social media such as Facebook and instagram. However, the presence of smartphones and the ability to take and edit photos does not make everyone a professional photographer. Taking photos alone is not the only aspect of photography. The field involves specialize knowledge, a clear career path, and a business model. Specialized knowledge in use of complex equipment, staging, lighting, shadows, and an eye for pictures and angles are mandatory for success.

Like in most artistic jobs, no definite path exists for one to become a professional in photography. There are several different paths that people follow. However, the first step of the journey is making a decision about the kind of photographer one would like to be. There are various types of photographers, including photojournalists, industrial photographers, scientific photographers, portrait photographers, fine arts photographers, and commercial photographers.

Most of the work of a portrait photographer is done in a studio. Clients who visit the studios have their photos taken on a wide range of backgrounds. Pictures can then be printed out and framed if necessary. However, these professionals also work outside the studios because they need to meet clients outside. Meetings can be held in offices, parks, schools, hotels, or private homes. They may also be required to take photos during the meetings.

The field of photography entails several different responsibilities. Self-employed photographers take clients from the public. Once they accept a client, they must ensure that they understand their needs well by discussing the kind of images they need and the purpose of the images. Based on the specific use the photos are meant for, these professionals also advise clients appropriately. They also engage in arranging still life objects, backgrounds, props, products, and scenes for photo shooting.

The work of photography involves liaising with professionals in other fields. Some of the professionals one may need to liaise with are commissioning editors, art directors, graphic designers, writers, gallery managers, and picture researchers. Photographers usually communicate with photographic subjects during photo shoot sessions. They communicate to direct, encourage, and ease tension in the subjects.

A degree is not mandatory for one to enter this field. However, it is more advantageous to have a degree or an equivalent professional qualification. Some of the subjects in which one can have a degree include graphics, photography, media studies, fine art, digital imaging, and art and design.
