Getting Down With A Poem Commission

By Timothy Allen

Humanity likes to believe that it exerts control over the world. This is true to some extent. Humanity can and does indeed often exert control over its surroundings. Of course, this control is limited. There are some things to do not lend themselves well to human intervention. Yet there are also some things that do lend themselves well to human intervention. Things like beauty. The world is full of it, and naturally so, but that does not mean that humanity cannot create more of it. Indeed, it often does, sometimes through a poem commission.

A poem is a series of verses. They are not necessarily rhyming, though most people think they do. But there is a structure to them. A series of couplets that flow together.

An art commission is a transaction of the economic variety. A client wants some art. So they find themselves an artist. The client pays the artist some money, and then the artist creates some art and then gives it to the client. This was how many of the old masters honed their skills and put food in their bellies.

There a multitude of reasons for commissions. For one, not every single person on the face of the planet is going to have an artistic inclination. They can appreciate it, yes. But they are not inclined to create it. So they hire people who are, people who may not have steady jobs because they are pursuing their art.

Poems have one purpose. That is to exist. But their existence is to be heard or read. They meant to move hearts and move minds as well.

The thing about poets, and other artists, is that they may not be readily available. The best place to find them in many cafes, but not chain cafes. Independent cafes with open mic nights are the best bet. As are college campuses. Of course, there is always the internet, where many of the younger creative types can be found.

Starving artists should be a thing of the past. The fact is that poets are people, and as people, they have needs, which are going to cost money in order to be met. Besides, a commission is explicitly about money, about how one party is paying money to the other in exchange for an artistic service.

Of course, there must be a level of skill on the part of the poet. Anyone can string words together. Anyone can put words together that rhyme. But not everyone can put the words together in a way that can break and mend hearts, put the rhymes together until the very core of a person in totally moved.

The world can be bland. Humanity can see that it is. So it created its way out of blandness.
