Tips For Finding The Perfect Dallas Santa For Hire

By Arthur Murray

If you've been put in charge of entertainment for the big Christmas bash at your child's school or the local community center, you don't have to wrack your brain for anything original. You know what all the kids will be waiting for. An arrival from the North Pole means the man in the red suit is on the premises. It's your job to make sure you find the most perfect Dallas Santa for hire possible.

You might be able to talk a child's dad or grandfather into playing the role, unless you don't trust them to take the job seriously. If no one is available, you will have to get in touch with a talent agency. Santas can't have criminal records, especially when children are involved. Getting the fingerprints of the person you are considering hiring should be easy. The local police station may run the prints for you for free.

The annual Christmas bash is probably the biggest event of the school year. You can't afford to wait until after Halloween to book a performer. Most agencies advise event coordinators to make reservations for someone in August or September at the latest. This is when repeat customers are booking the most popular actors. By November the only people left are those nobody else wants.

If you have a lot of kids attending the event, you've got to plan for enough time for each one to sit on Santa's lap, have a short conversation, and take a picture. Agencies estimate that most Santas can handle about 50 kids per hour if they rush. This isn't ideal, and you should figure on about 4 minutes per child to keep everybody happy.

You might think placing the big man right next to a roaring fire would make for great photos. That may be true, but it will also make for a very uncomfortable performer. Those suits with the padding and boots are heavy and hot. Placing a special throne in the center of the room will accommodate the actor and make for great photos as well. You need to be in constant communication with the performer so you can announce his arrival before he's spotted.

Hiring a Mrs. Santa and a sleigh full of elves might seem like a good idea. Agencies say it usually ends up overwhelming the kids. They say a better idea is to hire face painters and balloon artists to entertain the kids while they're waiting to talk to the star of the party.

To make sure your expectations are met, you should know what Santas traditionally do at these kinds of events. They certainly give out presents and have their pictures taken with everyone. They will also lead the group in Christmas carols and read stories.

Taking on the entertainment responsibilities for this kind of event can be nerve wracking. Mr. Claus is an important man in the lives of small children. To avoid traumatizing them with a bad Santa, you must plan ahead and choose wisely.
