ESP Alive And Well At NYC Mentalism Shows

By Henry Green

The art of Extra Sensory Perception is a rather ancient one. For, mentalists are performing artists with what appear to be special powers. In most cases, these are individuals whom have a keen sense of awareness and strong intuitive powers such as those now performing in NYC Mentalism Shows.

These types of shows can include different areas of the occult, these include hypnosis, telepathy, clairvoyance, rapid mathematics, deduction, memory feats, mind control, mediumship, psychokinesis, precognition and divination. While most of these practices require psychic powers, some can be achieved through other methods. In addition, bizzarists and psychic readers often work at fairs and festival rather than performing on stage.

Much of what mentalists perform on stage can be traced back to a number of tests conducted by mediums and others believed to have supernatural powers in the nineteenth century. The history of mentalism goes back to the days of the Old Testament. For, some say that scriptures in the Old Testament referring to prophecy are actually referring to mentalism.

Professional mentalists and magicians are generally considered one of the earliest of live stage acts. For, the earliest live stage performance by Girolamo Scotto, a well known sleight-of-hand magician occurred in 1572. While some have suggested that mentalist can be learned, others attribute the skills to having supernatural or psychic powers. Regardless, magicians and mentalists have been entertaining and astounding crowds for centuries.

Derren Brown and other more contemporary performers often attribute these skills to natural abilities such as being able to read body language or use psychological suggestion and misdirection to create subliminal control. For contemporaries whom perform live in city squares and streets, audiences often become a part of the act. For, Derren Brown and others tend to make audiences aware that everything in the act is an illusion.

Some magicians have issues lying to audiences about whether or not a magic act is real. Whereas, as mentalists have been reported to have psychic or supernatural powers, mind reading and memory feats could actually be real. At the same time, there is a thin line between magic and reality in both magic and mentalism. For example, there can also be mentalists whom are just playing tricks with an audience. Whereas, a magician may only tell half-truths about how a trick is performed even though the magicians code states that the magic behind any trick is never to be revealed.

Most mentalists shy away from using traditional magic tricks during a performance. For, doing so would associate mentalists with the theatrical trickery often performed by stage magicians and illusionists. In fact, a number of mentalists do not use the title magician at all. For, there are some whom insist that the art of mentalism is altogether a different art form.

In most cases, mentalists will argue that there is nothing wrong with invoking a belief that something is real whether the performer is psychic or otherwise. For, the right audience will believe the performer is telling the truth just because the idea has been presented. Whereas, those making these claims are often mentalists whom are believed to have supernatural powers. As such, the real magic lies in whether or not an audience can perceive truths from falsehoods.
