Boxee TV Offers A Decent Alternate To Cable

By Cornelius Nunev

Who out there is fed up with satellite, what with the ever-changing rates, dropping channels basic cable has and those god-awful commercials? One might consider having a look at Boxee Television, a web-based television system that can save cash and get a ton of the same programming.

Boxee Television makes it hard on cable and simple on consumers

There are many boxes available to hook up to your Television. Then, it will record shows if you would like it to with a DVR function, and it can access Netflix, Hulu and more through the internet.

Boxee TV is a new one coming out, but it is a bit different from the rest, according to Time Magazine. The new Boxee Television utilizes cloud storage for DVR recordings, which makes it very different from the Television box it released and failed with a couple of years ago.

DVR services can be added to your Boxee for only $14.99 a month, which is more costly than some companies but not that bad. On top of that, the Boxee Television only starts at $99 for the box.

Currently getting an antenna

The Boxee TV comes with applications on it for VUDU, YouTube, Pandora, Vimeo and Netflix, making it really simple on customers. It also can plug in to the cable port to be used as a DVR box. The other nice thing about it is that it has an antenna, meaning you can pick up ABC, CBS, NBC and other public broadcast stations through it.

The way it differs from similar boxes such as Roku or Netgear, which are cheaper by half, is that Boxee TV doesn't have any on-board memory, nor does it require an external hard drive for storage, such as the recently-released Simple.TV, according to CNET. Storage is done via uploading content to a cloud "locker," which consumers can access at any time. It is a dual-code DVR recorder and can record two programs simultaneously. Consumers can't stop live programs, like on TiVo, however.

The box is nice because you have unlimited room for DVR recording. You will not need short term loans to pay the $14.99 fee for it more than likely.

Not everyone has access

The Boxee Television comes with DVR, but that is only available in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York, Los Angles, Chicago, Dallas and Houston right now. The company plans to expand that in the next year, but not everyone has access to the DVR services.

Everyone else can only use it as a streaming device, until DVR services are available everywhere. At that it fails, since other set-top boxes for those who want to cut the cord are much cheaper and have more or the same streaming native apps.
