Instructions On How To Wrap A Turban

By Kate McMahon

Many people, men, women and children included, in several Asian and Middle Eastern societies wear a distinctive type of head wear for religious, cultural and practical reasons. It is a covering made from twisting a single length of fabric around their heads to form a high circular formation that encompasses the top skull section. These are instructions on how to wrap a turban in one a style that is commonly worn.

To begin one need to get a snug fitting cotton fabric cap to place over the head. They are generally white, brimless and should be free of any time of decoration including jewels, lace or embroidery. This item is necessary to keep one's hair from getting tangled up while the cloth is being twisted around, and to keep the layers from slipping so that the final look is neat and orderly.

The covering will be made from a single length of fabric that needs to be a yard wide and at least six foot long, longer if one wishes to have a larger finished product. Material is a personal choice that may be based on the purpose for which one is wearing the hat. Prepare for the process by halving the cloth four times along the long side until it is roughly about four inches in width.

Place the first short end against the nape of one's neck on the lower right side. Start winding the length by going up and to the left over the head, high above the ear. Bring it across the forehead and then around towards the back, coming very close behind the ear on the right and continuing the flow following the base hair line.

On the second round the upward wrap should be right behind one's ear, swinging up across the front of the face. The intersection of the passes should form an "X" in the center of the forehead right at the hairline's base. Keep in mind that until one has had a bit of time to practice, this first part may seem a little awkward but it will quickly become much easier.

Keep wrapping in this fashion but position each new circuit so that approximately one inch of the one beneath it still shows. As more of the cloth is wound around the head, the circles will become higher and slightly wider. It is this action that actually provides that classic layered round turban appearance.

When the entire length of fabric has finally been added to the pile, take the inner edge of the last one and tuck it beneath those encircling the center. It is normal and expected for the middle section to show an exposed section of skull cap. Gently pull out the piece that started the whole thing, releasing the end from the nape.

Unfold this section of fabric until it forms a smooth, flat layer that completely covers all exposed parts of skull cap. Tuck all the loose ends up under the edges around the open part in the hat. This is an easy explanation of how to wrap a turban though there are literally hundreds of variations that each provide a somewhat different look.
