How To Choose Work Gloves

By Essie Osborn

Not everyone knows how to choose the right protection. For example, a mobile workforce like construction teams use a different type of material than what a gardener might use. Keep in mind, your hands need to be protected and not all materials would be suitable. The importance of work gloves are often overlooked, do not make the mistake of working without appropriate protection.

You should choose the right materials based on the task at hand. Using the right materials ensures that you complete your work in a safe and efficient manner. There are various materials which you can use to ensure that your work is done easily and safely.

Leather protection is good for job descriptions such as construction. If you garden, you should use canvas or knit material. When dealing with toxic or wet substances, you should consider using nitrile or latex. Latex or nitrile is known as rubber to most people. Whatever protection you use, aside from disposables, most materials are built to last as well as durable.

Cleaning gutters is a dangerous and messy job description. When one is cleaning downspouts and gutters, tough work hand protection helps protect the hands from sharp objects and jagged twigs. The best type of material to look for when one is involved in a gutter cleaning job is split cowhide. Split cowhides are made of tough leather and are moderately insulated.

Split cowhides tend to stiff a little after being exposed to wet conditions, but they tend to soften with wear. Window washing is another messy job that requires the use of hand protection. Nitrile material gives the user a firm grip, and some are cheap and disposable. Disposables are good after any messy job because they can be tossed. For example, when a family is washing a car, everyone needs protection against prolonged water exposure, but the protection is not permanently needed, the protection can be tossed after the job.

Outdoor hand protection is usually of the knit cotton variety or polyester canvas. They are good for added protection against nails while allowing a good deal of flexibility. Heavy-duty canvas usually has leather palms to protect the hands, and some of them have dots that provided added grip-ability. They are comfortable and durable.

Disposable latex or nitrile material is best used when dealing with poison ivy, poison oak, nettles, or other noxious weeds. The noxious hazards typically stay on the gloves, even after washing them. It is ideal to use disposable gloves in situations such as this. If you deal with pruning trees, thorny citruses, grubbing blackberries, or clipping pyracanthas, you should invest in durable cowhide material.

When you choose your material, you should think about the following steps. Ask yourself why you need a specific material; product your items from your hands or protect your hands from the items. Ask yourself what types of hazards your hands will be exposed to; bacteria, chemicals, viruses, electrical exposure, extreme temperatures, or abrasive surfaces. If you determine these exposures accurately, you can choose the right material for the task at hand.

Always exercise due diligence when you choose quality hand protection. Sometimes hardware shops will help you determine what you need. Just remember that your safety is paramount, and the materials you use can mean the difference between an injury and a permanent disability. Working responsibly ensures that everyone is protected appropriately.
