Poetry has been taken with a lot of seriousness despite lacking a poetic king for a long time in this state. There have been many efforts in nurturing poets in New Mexico. Most notably are efforts by an organization of high schools in forming the poetry out loud group, and the New Mexico Poetry Society. The former is a recitation competition for high school students while the later is a non-profit making organization charged with the responsibility of nurturing poetry.
the state society of poetry was founded by Alice Briley in the 1960s and has been very active in nurturing poets since then. It strongly supports the cultural welfare of different groups of people. This support is depicted in all their works. It not only engages in engages in literary but also educational activities. Their disregard for taking sides makes them to also disregard harsh religious, social and political view points. Members are, therefore, banned from participating in political, social and religious campaigns on behalf of the group.
This society boasts of a number of poets. Among them are; Jim Applegate, Joe Shaffer, Jeanette Oestermeyer, Ann Applegarth and Lynn Baldwin among many other renowned poets. This organization has been in operation for all this while despite most of its founding members moving out of the state. In recent years, they have formed a strong partnership with the Eastern University. The partnership has helped organize student competitions which receive a lot of competitors and viewers.
The society formed what they called the RGV chapter that has continuously motivated budding poets. It formed collaboration with the University of New Mexico. This collaboration was in form of lectures and guidance in writing poetry. The university in turn admitted students with the purpose of imparting in them the skills gained from the RGV poets. This collaboration later resulted in needy students being offered sponsored scholarships at the larger poetic society.
Poetry loud is another group composed of mainly teachers whose core function is organizing recitation competition. They normally prizes at both national and state levels. The group does this in all the states in the country. The main prizes are 200 dollars for the winner and 200 dollars for the second-placed. They also cater for all the transportation costs for the main winner. They also offer some money for the refurbishing of school libraries for both the first-place and second-place winners. National competitions carry about ten times the amount of prize given at the state level.
Among the most influential poets are Dana Levin, Pata Mora and D. H Lawrence who migrated from Britain. Their poems were well received by their readers in this state and the other parts of the world. These are among the first professional poets in this state.
These writers wrote on different themes in different periods of time. They addressed problems brought by industrialization, political revolutions, love and modernization among many other themes as determined by occurrences at the time. They received recognition just like their colleagues in other states.
Their styles equally differed as dictated by relevant literary movements in place when the poems were written. The movements included symbolism, romanticism realism and naturalism. Each of these movements greatly impacted on the poems. Each of the movements came with its style.
