Identifying Genres For The Anime Reviewer

By Estelle Larsen

The universe of animeshoon has many types that are not usually found in other works. The western side of the globe might have offered you dystopian and post apocalyptic films, but anime has more than just those. Manga has stuck to its very own culture.

In music, we learn how black metal is not death metal. If you aim to be a professional anime reviewer, you must be able to distinguish the many classifications of animated work. Here are some of them.

Films that have a pilotable robots in the center of their story are known as mecha. These robots could be gigantic, humanoid, or even a set of small ones combined to form an ultra mega robot that can destroy its enemies. They are generally at war with each other or are fighting off evil.

Romance has two sub genres while they might sometimes be closer to hentai, the pornographic equivalent in anime, but can be distinguishable. Harem features a male protagonist who is usually shy and awkward and surrounded by archetyped females vying for his affection, while a reverse harem consists of the opposite. Ecchi refers to work that has sexual content but do no go as far as graphic sex, and is usually humorous with the sudden groping and nudity in their scenes.

The magical girl genre shows innocent girls, typically cute and young, to transform into some super heroine version of their own selves. The plot involves these girls fighting an evil force. They tend to be prepubescent or teenage, and themes such as love, friendship, and growing up revolve around these characters.

If you find films that feature a superstar that has everything, that is an idol manga. Generally constituting of people from humble beginnings who rise to overkill stardom, there is an entire culture dedicated and built around them. Many of this kind of work can fall under the slice of life classification.

Living things that almost look like very cuddly animals are actually trainable monsters, and they are the central characters of monster battle movies. Card games can become a real life deal between life and death with card battle animations. These are perhaps the most popular and familiar kind, and they are often paired with game merchandise.

Gay relationships as a central storyline are called shonen ai, and a film with a female homosexual relationship is known as shoujo ai. They focus more on the love story rather than the sex. If they become sexually graphic, yaoi and yuri are used respectively.

There are subcultures dedicated to each form of anime, and infiltrating them will help you become familiar to the works. But perhaps the most helpful hint in actually determining the genre is to know the target audience of the show, as for example, shonen ai and shoujo ai are for young boys and girls while yaoi and yuri are for adults. Their alternate universes are cues and their characters are the giveaways, but the real deal is about for whom they are intended.
