What You Have To Put Into Consideration When Choosing UPS

By Armando Rodriguez

UPS system can be defined as battery backup devices offering power services to computers or devices especially during power interruption. The abbreviation stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply and such devices are meant to prevent other devices from shutting down improperly during power blowouts. This was designed to correct power related issues such as over voltages and possible damages. Before choosing UPS system for your office use, some considerations are very necessary.

You would have to consider whether the UPS system can supply enough power as demanded by your computer or other devices. Some devices like wireless routers would require a lot of power that your UPS may not offer. You should also buy a battery backup device that can alert you in case of over-voltages or power insufficiency. Considering that different devices require varying power output depending on your work, investing in a more reliable UPS system can solve power interruption problem.

Another important factor to consider is the backup run time which determines how long the UPS will supply power. Some UPS might last for a short period of less than 30 minutes depending on its power output. Desktop computers require more power that the laptop. The UPS should offer a long period of use and should not cut power supply without an alert. This may damage your computer or devices.

Another type of UPS system is on-line interactive type that features an inbuilt transformer. The system will detect changes in power supply to ensure that your computer hardly goes to battery power unless the current supply is too low. It is not advisable to use such a UPS system during a frequently power interrupted period to avoid consecutive switching to battery power, since such a process may impact negatively on the battery capacity or lifespan.

There is also an on-line interactive type that has an inbuilt transformer that controls the AC voltage when too high or too low. This ensures that the device battery will be used only when incoming power supply drops too low. Too much power interruptions can damage your battery as the UPS keeps on switching to battery. This will reduce your battery usage lifetime and the battery capacity.

The best UPS system is the dual compression model that features an advanced system. Power quality is determined and reconstructed to suit your devices power requirements. An inbuilt inverter will convert AC power to DC power and later to AC after all power shortcomings have been addressed. This model will hardly damage your battery or affect the life span.

It is also of importance to consider how your backup system output power. This has to do with the actual sine wave power from an AC current. Some backup systems may not output the correct sine wave power but instead convert the power to square wave. This may not support power consuming devices like wireless routers and they may go off or get damaged in the process. To ensure you get the best value for money, consider trying the dual conversion UPS systems.

Lastly, find out the specifications of the power backup system in terms of number and nature of power outlet ports. You will need a backup system that can protect your battery and computer from power outages and blowouts results. Some cheaper systems have outlets that offer protection for only electrical noise and surges. Also consider whether the system has other ports that are fully protected from electrical risks. Such ports may include the Ethernet, phone jack and other cable outlets.
