Try Decorative Painting Patterns For The Holidays

By Douglas Fisher

For a lot of people, holiday decorating can be a lot of fun. However, for those who like to save money or want something not found at most stores, there is a practical solution. Trying out decorative painting patterns that are dedicated to certain holidays can help transform a space without spending a fortune.

Themes should reflect a personality but it also helps to keep practicality in mind. A good example is a mostly white decor as a princess theme, which is a nice visual but not ideal for a home with small children or active pets. If the person in charge of decorating is also a home renter, then it may help to consult with the landlord before making obvious changes.

Patterns or templates can be used in a number of places besides walls. Older wood tables and other hard furnishings may be given new life with an abstract or floral design accent. If it is not possible to have a running pattern that covers an entire wall space, then borders that cover the edges or entryways could be a nice solution.

Choosing the right paint depends mostly on how space is being used. Acrylic paint is affordable, is found at most major discount retail chains and dries quickly with a single coat. If a mistake is made, all it takes is a little soap and water to correct a fresh coat. If it has dried already, painting over the mistake is a possibility.

Another option is to use acrylic paint. It is inexpensive, dries quickly, and easy to correct in case a mistake is made. This type of paint can also be used on various surfaces, although there are some brands that sell acrylic paint for glass and metal.

Choosing the right paint can be tricky for those who do not paint regularly. Although watercolor paint kits do not take up a lot of space, these work best on paper surfaces. Some holiday decor kits may come with more than enough paint in seasonal colors that will only take up space once a project has been completed.

The best way to get around this is to buy a small set of acrylic paint in primary colors. Anyone who knows blending basics know that it is very easy to make green, purple, and orange using the small set only. Because these are fairly inexpensive, it may not hurt to buy large sizes of black, white, and maybe a set of metallic colors.

While some people go for contrasts when decorating, uniformed themes can be just as exciting to work on. For those who like florals, a pattern or template may be used on table tops, picture frames, or as a border on a wall. The great thing about using a pattern is that no one restricted to using pastel colors.

If using design templates for a specialized space, like a room for a child or the kitchen, there are some unusual touches that may be considered. Glitter or shimmer effects or even paint that glows in the dark can give a professional look for a fraction of the price. Even the concept does not last forever, it can still be a fun activity for all members of the family.
