By Edward Phillips

Most people who are amateurs in artistry do not know about the existence of surrealism. This is because this kind of artistry is ancient. More so, one cannot learn about all ancient arts in twenty-four hours. It takes time to master artistry. Surrealism, a movement that founded their art on writing and visual art, was established during the 1920s. The creativity and imagination of this movement were wild, captivating and interesting. So many surrealist artists MI has have created great interest in the movement. However, it is wise to know the origin of surrealism.

The movement of surrealism based their works on imagination by the unconscious or the subconscious. The movement was however influenced by another movement that was known as Dadaism. More so, surrealism also adopted their way of thinking from a great philosopher as well as a renowned dream expert. They used the imagination of these people to come up with their unique creativity.

Surrealism also has some Dadaism roots, a movement founded many years ago. The main difference between surrealism and Dadaism is that the former was much inspired by urban life and the ordinary day-to-day lives of people. More so, the creativity of surrealism was based on positivity while Dadaists were nihilistic and tended to use negative expressions so much.

At first, the surrealistic writers were reluctant to adopt visual art. They believed in the free expression of one's mind. They thus emphasized so much on automatic writing or automation. Their main fear was that if they adopted visual art, people would no longer write creatively. They thought that visual artistry would block their expression in writing.

There are two main visual art techniques that surrealism built. This included frottage, an art where one would place a sheet of paper on a surface that is grained. Then, the artiste would rub a crayon or a pencil on the sheet of paper. Another interesting technique was called grattage that used the same principle but with the use of pigments.

Another fact that you did not know is that the surrealism movement became highly political. Andre Breton, a poet, was highly influential to this movement. The group thus became highly dependent on the rationalism of the poet. The poet hoped to free the ordinary people from the rationalism of the society. Since the movement also had similar views, it became so dependent on the political aspects of the poet.

This movement became accused that they were sexist. The reason behind this was the way of dressing of female artistes. Since the group photos somehow did not feature the women, they started experimenting all types of dressing including cross-dressing. In addition to that, some artistes crafted images that represented women as lesser creatures or monsters. Over time, women started to depict themselves in a wild way. They expressed themselves as either animals or some other mythical creatures.

The surrealism movement, however, faced an enormous challenge during the 2nd World War. They all separated and ran to the US of America because of the fear of being persecuted. This did not affect their imagination. Their artworks have been carried on from century to century. Also, more and more artistes have a great interest in adopting this unique style.
