What To Know About Custom Monogramming

By Mia McCall

A monogram is the term used to describe a motif that is made through combining or overlapping of two or more letters to form a single symbol. This might also be done using other graphemes. Monograms are often made to include the initials of a company or individuals, and are frequently employed in logo and symbol designs. A collection of uncombined initials is known as a cipher and is not considered a monogram. Custom monogramming can be done on many different items for customization.

Many people do monogramming as part of a craft activity or hobby. There are also professional companies that provide such services in order to customize products. The motifs can make regular items more one of a kind. It is typical for people to do this for special gifts, especially as wedding presents.

These date back to the time around 350 BC. The earliest known use of these was on Greek coins that featured the first letters of the city names. These motifs have also been used by artists and craftsmen for hundreds of years. They are added to creative works, such as furniture, paintings and sculptures.

On an individual level, these may be used to customize the property of a person, include his or her clothing, luggage and stationery. Monograms of this sort tend to include only two or three letters. In the traditional format of three letters, the last name initial is always larger or there can be a treatment included in the center. The first name initial is usually set to the left side and the middle name initial is right aligned. For instance, a lady who is named Margaret Amber Jackson may have a monogram that has MJA. The J surname would be large and in the middle, while the M and A would be placed to the sides and smaller in size.

Couples that are married or engaged may use the two-letter set up to entwine their initials. This is often done for wedding invitations. A three-letter design might also be used by married couples who want to include the shared surname. For instance, MJA may be the gram used for a couple named Matthew and Annie Jackson.

There are numerous organizations and companies that utilize these for their logos, often incorporating acronyms. This is also typical for businesses in the fashion world. Fendi and Louis Vuitton are examples of fashion companies that use monograms in their logos. Generally speaking, this is a common type of branding.

Most craft stores sell the materials needed for this process, which may vary. Printed graphics of this kind, which are used for stationery or invitations, can be done on the computer programs. Designs done for cloth, such as shirts or towels, may require use of a sewing machine.

A common and easy way to turn basic items into unique, customized pieces is custom monogramming. These are motifs that may feature two- or three-letter designs made from acronyms or initials. There are businesses that offer professional monogramming services and many companies utilizes these for branding, logos, seals and other purposes. Individuals may use these to customize their property or special gifts.
