How To Draw Cartoon Characters Step-By-Step

By Krystal Branch

Nearly everybody wishes they knew how to draw cartoon characters, however those who cannot do it seem to think it is some kind of mystical art. They feel it is something that they needed to have learned in their school days, where they could either draw and paint, or they couldn't and would give up easily. Some of their friends could draw cartoons very easily, and they were very envious.

However, drawing is not something that you can either do or not do, it is something that can be easily learned. It just needs practice and a bit of dedication. There is nothing magical about it, and after a few hours you will be able to draw simple characters very easily, and before long you will become quite expert at it.

It is a good idea to study the cartoon characters that you see in comic books, and on television. You will notice that they are mainly based on very simple shapes. These are normally geometrical shapes such as squares, circles, and triangles. The character does not have to be complicated, and usually the simpler they are the better.

As with learning any new subject, you have to learn every new skill step-by-step. You will need to adopt a strategy to help you draw your characters much easily. When you start drawing the face, decide what shape you want first. If you want your character to have a long face, start with an oval shape, a round face means that you start with a circle, and if you want the character to have a square face, obviously you have to use a square. Making use of geometrical shapes makes your task a lot easier.

Take another look at the famous cartoon characters you see on your screen, and in comics, and you will see that these have been based on geometrical shapes as well. Now expand on this strategy when drawing the features of the face, such as the eyes and mouth. You should then go on to drawing the body, also making use of these shapes, and soon you will have sketched out your first cartoon character.

One basic rule you should try to follow in your drawings is to keep them as simple as possible. If you over-complicate your drawings you could easily run into problems, especially when you are starting out as a cartoonist. This could make the whole task very frustrating, and the enjoyment will be lost, and you will probably stop trying to draw.

It is only when you have completed the basic sketch, should you start adding any details. If you are unsure about what to add, go and have another look at cartoons drawn by famous artists, and see how they have used simple shapes to highlight individual characteristics. Do not worry about copying other cartoons, as this is just a way to begin developing your own style of drawing.

If you follow a simple step-by-step procedure you will soon learn how to draw cartoon characters. As you become more confident, the time it takes for you to draw great characters will speed up, so do not worry about how long the first ones take. It is so important that you concentrate on developing a strategy, and a style, and then you will start to get the results that you want.
