Discovering Health In An Online Humor Magazine

By Miranda Sweeney

Laughter is good for the heart and soul. Whether ill, or just needing a good laugh, it is said laughter heals. Regardless of work environment, taking to time out to read an online humor magazine like "The Onion, " or others during breaks, lunch hours, or before and after work can often be a blessing to health and happiness.

In recent days, science has shown why and how laughter heals. The first of which being that it is a natural and unavoidable response. It is good to read humorous content outside of working hours to avoid laugh out loud moments at the workplace. While not as important as breathing, or, the liver pumping blood, laughter is key to a happy and healthy life.

The new question in scientific circles is whether or not laughter can warrant needing a Laughter Therapist. Then if so, whether or not insurance companies should pay for the treatment. Most often insurance companies are not going to cover a prescription of laughter. On the bright side, at least there is no prescription cost associated with healing through laughter. Depending on the reason provided for the appointment, the office call in which it is prescribed may or may not be covered under various health care plans.

Norman Cousins, in his book Anatomy of An Illness discusses whether or not laughter heals pain. In his own experience, he claims ten minutes of laughing at television shows allowed him to sleep two hours without pain. For Mr. Cousins, these shows were the Marx Brothers and Candid Camera. On nights in which he did not watch television and laugh, it is rare he can get to sleep at all.

Mr. Cousins book might discuss laughter as a healing process, still it provides no solid scientific proof. Scientists, on the other hand has now stated that fifteen to twenty minutes a day can be good overall health and well being. Endorphins, as released during running are also released during laughter. Some individuals are prone to laugh attacks. When this is the case, the endorphins can cause a wide range of reactions from illness to silliness.

While there are critics to this scientific research, many doctors are now prescribing laughter for various illnesses and injuries. One of the best ways to see if laughter works to ease pain is to watch a funny program or stand up comedian while in pain. When combining a healthy diet and exercise with laughter, better health, happiness and well being are often just around the corner.

There are several ways in which laughter helps the body. These include producing the natural feel good endorphin which can help individuals, relax, reduce stress and sleep. It has since been proven that the natural high that comes from a regular running regimen can also be experienced through laughter.

Different types of humor can lead to different types of responses from others. For example, satire can often be hard to digest if one does not understand it is being provided in a humorous context. In other situations, like when watching sit-coms like New Girl and Seinfeld, laugh responses are based on personal taste when it comes to humor. Whereas, when watching stand-up comedy, at least part of the act is most likely going to result in a laugh response from audience members.
