Gaming Personalities: Can Art Colleges Help Create Them?

By Bob Oliver

When designing video games, it goes without saying that several elements will come into effect. Out of all of these, which one is the strongest? To me, it's the creation of characters but it's easy to overlook what is needed in order to make them as appealing as possible. What are some of the most important steps to consider as far as creating game characters is concerned? Art colleges can teach you a tremendous amount. Here are 3 ways that you can make these personalities in video games shine.

1. Have a rudimentary idea of who your character is supposed to be before you decide to give them an identity. The gender of the character is essential, which goes without saying. However, is your character going to be the kind of person you'll root for until the end or someone who you are looking to pursue in order to see yourself to the end credits? While these concepts may seem plain on the surface, you will be surprised by how they will come together in order to make the best possible game.

2. Not only do you have to treat your characters well from an aesthetic standpoint but the same can be said about environments as well. If you go to one of various art colleges, you are going to learn a lot about the various styles of art that can be integrated into games. Maybe a game will prove to be grittier, which would most likely call for more realistic imagery. On the other hand, if you're looking to bring a warmer feel to your creation, it goes without saying that a brighter palette of colors will be utilized.

3. Perhaps more important than anything else, you have to be confident that you can use a style to its fullest. It may be a problem if you leap into a particular style without any prior training, since chances are that the game will appear sloppy when you clearly did not mean it to be that way. What this means is that if you are more familiar with cartoon-like appearances, see if you can bring them to the forefront. If you aren't ready to go for more real-life visuals, do not attempt it if there's something else you can fall back on.

These are just a couple of points to consider if you are attempting to create a video game character. It is important for you to learn from colleges focused on art so that you can have a general idea of how certain technologies work. After all, unless you are good with computers, you are not going to be able to make a name for yourself as a game designer. That being said, once you have this skill set in place, all you have to do is allow your imagination to run wild.
