Most progressive companies have long moved away from the management approach where managers make all the decisions and the rest of the employees simply obey instruction. The modern approach is to allow smaller groups of employees to make decisions themselves, to implement new procedures and to take responsibility for their performance. It has become very popular to send working groups on special excursions that are supposed to allow members of the group to interact with each other, to get to know each other and to learn techniques that will improve their productivity and contentment at work. Both personal and group development and growth is desired from these excursions, which vary in length from a single day to a few days.

There is no shortage of contractors that advertise their services as expert facilitators for corporate group excursions. The scope of the programs that they offer wildly, with some specializing in a very specific area, such as communications skills. A large variety of others, including activity managers, motivation speakers, psychologists and venues have also realized that companies are willing to spend considerable amounts on the development of their employees.

Word that there is money to be made in this field has spread quickly and there are, sadly, many facilitators that have no or very little experience or qualifications. Reputable facilitators will be more than willing to submit valid references and proof of their qualifications and experience. Many are members of reputable professional organizations. They are able to offer a wide variety of activities and venues.

Facilitators cannot be expected to submit proposals and quotations unless they have been fully briefed. They need to know as much as possible about the participants because this will determine which activities will be most suitable. The budget should also be spelled out and any other restraints, such as when and for how long the excursion must be planned should be clear. The more detailed the information they are given, the better they will be able to develop a suitable proposal.

Quotations should clearly indicate how the intended objectives will be achieved and a selection of possible activities and lectures should also be submitted, the value of each clearly indicated. If sub contractors will be used, reasons should be provided why they are deemed necessary. Facilitators should preferably present their proposals personally. The participants should then have input in the program before a final decision is made.

To gain full value from a development excursion detailed feedback should be asked from the participants. The group as a whole should compile a report focusing on the quality of service rendered, problems that were encountered and the value of the program in achieving the goals of the excursion. Individual group members should also provide feedback, possibly by means of a questionnaire which will make the compilation of statistics easier.

Groups of workers that are happy, motivated, empowered and appreciated are more productive. They are more likely to be innovative and to improvise. They work harder and they fully support the vision of the employer. If a team build can help achieve this situation then it should be considered seriously.
